From Brownie to Girl Scout

Emily had her "bridging ceremony" last weekend. This is where the brownies cross the bridge and become Junior girl scouts. She was super excited. We are new to girl scouts this past year, but Emily has really embraced it. (She also sold the most cookies in her troop!) But anyway :) This has been a great experience for her. She also went to a weekend camp out without Mom, and did just great! While this may not seem like a HUGE deal to most, At our house this is a big milestone.

Emily has Aspergers.

"Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. In Asperger's Disorder, affected individuals are characterized by social isolation and eccentric behavior in childhood. There are impairments in two-sided social interaction and non-verbal communication. Though grammatical, their speech may sound peculiar due to abnormalities of inflection and a repetitive pattern. Clumsiness may be prominent both in their articulation and gross motor behavior. They usually have a circumscribed area of interest which usually leaves no space for more age appropriate, common interests. "

Some days are awesome, some are pretty rough (Just like most people LOL) But by rough, I mean SCREAMING meltdown fits, handflapping, destroying things, etc. The list varies depending on the day.

So for her to get through a whole year of girl scouts, and 2 days at camp are a cause for celebration at this house!!

From a fellow Girl Scout (now alumni) tell her I said congrats! Juliette Gordon Low would be so proud!! Do they still have them do the part where they look into the "pond" after they crossed over the bridge?
